Canterbury Branch 50th Anniversary
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of our Branch, we had a celebration on Saturday 10 February 2018 at Parklands Baptist Church with 91 people in attendance. We had speeches by Robyn Williams, NZSG Chairperson, on the future of NZSG, Fiona Brooker on the NZSG 2018 Conference (being held in Christchurch on Queen’s Birthday weekend) and Alan Tunnicliffe on the Branch History he has recently compiled. These were followed by a wonderful storytelling by Margaret Copland – “A Wife for Johnny, 1899”.
Certificates of Appreciation were presented to some members for their contributions to our Branch. The very first meeting on 12 February 1968 was held at the home of Betty Peters (now Riley) in Springfield Road. Betty cut the cake, with seven other members looking on who were also at the first meeting.
With the ‘formalities’ out of the way, we had a lovely light lunch with lots of chit-chat and catching up by members who hadn’t seen each other in a while.

FamilySearch Affiliate Library Status
As of the start of October 2018 we completed all the cabling, setup etc. to become a FamilySearch Affiliate Library. You can now access most of the restricted FamilySearch records (showing a key symbol, or where the location says Family History Library) at our branch library – either on our computers or you can bring your own device and connect to our WiFi.
